What to wear to the Ball
_1860's Period dress is required for the evening! Dressing in correct period attire adds to the enjoyment of all participants.
We offer the following information to assist you. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
Guidelines are to assist new participants so they may feel comfortable in the ballroom. Please help us to graciously welcome newcomers into the fold of fellowship and living history.
Our Civil War Lady Store will be located at the Gettysburg Hotel Friday & Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for your shopping needs. We carry white gloves for both men and women, fans, jewelry and accessories.

Children:
Must be over the age of 14 + accompanied by a parent and must be dressed in correct formal dress.
No tennis shoes, no zippered clothing, and no camp clothing, thank you.

- 1850's - 1860's period evening wear. Please view our many photographs on this website.
- Floral, Feathers, Ribbons, Lace etc were worn in the hair for evening & balls. Hats & bonnets are worn outdoors and not into the ballroom.
- White or light pastel gloves are a must. Kid
leather preferred, but many wear wrist length cotton for the evening
which are totally acceptable.
- 1860's period Ball gowns preferred.You will feel most comfortable in a Ballgown. However, Dinner Gowns are acceptable, your very best 1860's day dress alternative.
- Comfortable dance shoes (photos of examples below to assist you). We are more concerned with your comfort and safety ladies!
- Wraps: are normally worn outdoors. If you prefer a light shawl, it should be placed at your seat while dancing and not worn on the dance floor.
- A fan, either simple or ornate, is very useful in the ballroom.
- Please contact us if we can be of assistance to you! You will find many genteel ladies present will assist you with any questions at the ball.

We recognize that beginning reenactors may not yet have formal ball wear for the evening and recommend that they wear their very best 1850's - 1860's apparel.

For Gentlemen:
All branches of 1860's Military Welcome in Blue or Gray
- This means your best Military Apparel at any rank worn with white gloves.
- Mens Civilian 1860's wear ( you will want to wear your suit coat, sack coat, or jacket with tie).
- Wear your nicest period Civilian attire.
- White kid leather OR white cotton gloves are a must in the ballroom. Please contact us if needed.
- For Gentlemen desiring to rent a Tux package for the evening, T & S Menswear, across the street from the Gettysburg Hotel (717) 334-7575 has a period formal Tux Rental package for the ball for the evening at a reasonable cost. Pre-order at least ten days ahead and for Susan to assist you with the package. We are not responsible for tux rentals and only provide this information to assist you.
Historical Impressionists:Please note: President Lincoln, Mrs. Lincoln, President Jefferson Davis and Mrs. Davis are engaged to appear at this ball. We therefor respectfully decline further Lincoln or Davis impersonators for the historical enjoyment of our guests.
